What is the Foundation Clinic Mauao Half Marathon?

The Foundation Clinic Mauao Half Marathon is a community focused fun run/walk which traverses one of the Bay Of Plenty's most iconic natural attractions, Mauao (Mt Maunganui)

Whether a competitive off road Mountain Goat runner or someone just looking for a challenge with breath-taking scenery, the Foundation Clinic Mauao Half Marathon appeals to all. The course involves ascending and descending Mt Maunganui three times and three laps around the Mt Maunganui base track. The event can be completed individually or in a 3 person team (one accent/decent and once around base track each.) 

Foundation Sports & Rehabilitation Clinic is the driving force and naming sponsor behind the event. Foundation is a sports focused physiotherapy and rehabilitation clinic who play an active role in the community. Their aim is to inspire their community to lead more healthy and active lifestyles.

The Route

The Route

There will be Marshals at all intersection along the route. There will also be marshals along parts of the route which are dangerous to ensure your safety and the safety of others using Mauao.

All laps of the base track will be in an Anti-Clockwise direction.

It is your responsibility to know the course. The marshals are there to help you out, there will also be signs along the route.

Lap 1 Map

Lap 1 - Up the stairs, down the North Face and around the base

Start at the Main Beach at Mt Maunganui.

Proceed along the boardwalk heading towards Mauao. Take the base track heading around Mauao. After approx. 600m you will be directed to take a hard left turn up onto the farm paddock and then along the paddock to the top of the stone stairs. Following the marshalls directions you'll join the track heading up to the summit, up the stairs track. Follow this all the way to the top of Mauao, the Trig.

From the summit, you continue follow the track over the top of Mauao descending along the 4WD track. Partway down there is a track off to the right, the North Face track. Turn right down here and follow this track all the way to the base track.

Once you hit the base track you turn left and follow the base track in an anti-clockwise direction back to the Mt main beach where you started.

Lap 2 - Up the North Face, down the 4WD track and around the base 

Start at the Main Beach at Mt Maunganui.

Follow the boardwalk heading towards Mauao. Take the track up the stone stairs and follow the track until you reach the next fork.

Take the North Face Track on the right. Follow this until you reach the 4WD track where you turn left and follow this track up. Just before you reach the lookout take a right turn onto a narrow track which takes you to the trig at the top of Mauao. From here you descend following the stairs until you reach the first fork where you turn right and follow the track through to the 4WD track.

Follow the 4WD track all the way to the bottom. You will come out on Pilot Quay follow this then turn left onto Adam's Ave following this to the Mt Maunganui Surflifesaving club where you turn left and follow the boardwalk heading towards Mauao.

Once you hit the base track you turn right and follow the base track in an anti-clockwise direction back to the Mount main beach.

Lap 3 - Up the 4WD track, down the stairs and around the Base

Start at the Main Beach at Mt Maunganui.

Proceed along Adam's Ave onto Pilot Quay.

Take the track on the right to enter the 4WD Track heading up Mauao.

Follow this 4WD track all the way to the top until just before the summit lookout where you take a right turn onto a narrow track which takes you to the trig at the top of Mauao.

From here you descend following the stairs all the way to the base of Mauao.

Once you hit the base track you turn left and follow the base track in an anti-clockwise direction back to the finish on the main beach Mt Maunganui.

Approx. 6.58km

What is the Event Day Schedule?

6:30am: Registration & race number pick up opens (closes at 7:15am)

7:25am: Race briefing

7:30am: Start both teams and individuals

12:00pm: Prize Giving

Are there any Aid Stations?

There will be a drink station at the Start/Finish/Transition area at the Mt main beach. This station will have water and R-Line.

There will be an aid station part way up the 4WD track which you will pass at least once on each lap. This station will have water and R-Line.

There will also be an aid station at the top of Mauao by the trig. This station will have water and R-Line.

Where can I pick up my race number?

You can pick up your race numbers from either:

Foundation Clinic 78 First Ave from 12-5pm on Friday 22nd March March,

or at the Start/Finish area from 6:30-7.15am on the morning of the event.

Is there Food & Drink at the Event?

Apart from the aid station, there will be no food or drink for sale at the event. There are local cafes across the road along Marine Parade with great food, coffee and other drinks.

What if I need to withdraw before the day?

Just get in touch! Please note, no refunds will be paid for withdrawals after 28th February 2024. Any withdrawals after 1st February 2024 will incur a $20 admin fee.

Is there a Prize Giving?

Yes! Prize giving will start at 12pm at the Start/Finish area.
Winners in each category will be announced.

How does the Race Timing work?

Numbers must be worn on the front. Each member of the team will have their own number.

There is electronic time keeping as well as lap times.

Where can I find the results?

Results will be published on the website within a few days of the event.

What if it hurts?

Foundation Clinic will be offering Free physio and strapping before, during and after the event. There will also be massage for a small cost.

EMT will be onsite at the start/finish area for all your medical needs.
